Example of introduction to music essay. What is the “Mozart Effect”?

Can music affect the intellectual development of the child in the womb? And if so, which genre, style and composers should be given preference? What of this can contribute to the fact that the baby will be more developed intellectually and creatively and more sociable? These questions, of course, are of interest to many future parents.

In 1990, a study of the “Mozart effect” on human  was carried out. In the mentioned study it was suggested that Mozart’s music contributes to the development of the brain, and it was also hypothesized that a special musical composition, say, Mozart’s string quartet, creates more “forming” excitations in the brain than other genres or even other classical composers, for example such as Bach or Beethoven. However, during the research this was not proved and such assumptions were debunked.

Despite the fact that the study of the positive impact of music on development has not been successful, this does not mean that perinatal music or a concert has no advantages in the development of babies – it’s just hard to prove! Thus, the study of the “Mozart effect” led to the practice of listening to classical music, and Mozart in particular, by pregnant and young children in order to develop babies.

Main body. How does music influence development?

Theoretically, there is a certain correlation between music and brain development. The reproduction of music stimulates the development of the brain by facilitating the development of neuronal synapses, that is, connections of brain cells. The more developed neural synapses, the more developed the brain is on the intellectual and physical levels. Such prospective benefits are increased cognitive development, concentration, improved sleep, more developed language skills and abilities, improved motor movements and spatial coordination.

Listening to music is less effective than playing it, but it also helps to stimulate the brain. If children do not receive enough stimulation of neural synapses, their mental development will slow down. That’s why it is important to constantly interact with the child, embrace it, talk, sing or listen to music that will capture the child’s interest. Listening to music can also contribute to the production and release of antibodies in the brain, called endorphins. Endorphins are chemical substances in the brain that promote good health, help fight infections and relieve pain. Thus, listening to music can be useful for a happy and healthy life!

Example of main body of music essay. Do children hear in the womb?

The ear in the embryo first appears on the 5th week of pregnancy, but it begins to function only about the 16th week. As is known from ultrasonic observation, approximately at this time the fetus starts to hear and perceive sounds, and at 24-26 week, it begins to react to sound pulses. Different sounds can help change the fetal heartbeat, reduce or increase motor activity.

Of course, the most pleasant and familiar sound from the outside for a baby in the womb is the mother’s voice. Before the birth, the baby is so used to the voice of his mother that after birth he recognizes it: the baby calms down hearing it. If the future mother read a book to a kid, sang a song, listened to music, then with a high probability the baby after the birth will recognize this tale, song or music, he will hear familiar sounds and calm down. Voices of people around the mother are heard by the fetus worse, because there are a lot of sounds in the environment of the uterus: the noise of the heart, blood, breathing and others.

Hearing is probably the most developed of all the senses before birth. Based on this information, it is logical to start listening to music for the development of the baby at the end of the second – the beginning of the third trimester.

So, according to theory, perinatal music is a sound stimulation of certain brain structures, which can give positive results in the development of the fetus. Unfortunately, various sources claiming positive influence of music on the development of the fetus during pregnancy have scanty evidence, mostly representing disparate facts on the basis of which such statements are being made. The fact is that there are too many variables affecting the development of the fetus, including nutrition, the general state of health of the future mother, the consumption of various foods, nutrients and vitamins or even the surrounding sound – the height and tenor of the mother’s voice and the people surrounding her in everyday life. In addition, many future mothers read to their future children and, perhaps, the choice of these or those works is also able to exert their influence on the development of a future child.

Thus, the development of the fetus is in many ways too complex and multifaceted to ever determine whether music has any influence on it, let alone a certain style or genre. Some more cautious doctors believe that the physical reactions of the unborn child when listening to music, in particular the heart rate and fetal movement, can be associated with a feeling of discomfort, not comfort. Nevertheless, of course, listening to classical music with a moderate level of loudness will not prevent the development of the child.

Example of conclusion to music essay. Why is it useful to listen to classical music?

A number of studies contrasted the influence of various types of music on the growth of plants, and the classical style in all cases won. Plants begin to grow and lean towards the sound of calm classical music, actively avoiding the style of “heavy rock”, “metal”, “chaos” and others. In addition, animal studies show that the impact of “chaotic” or “atonal” music changes the structure of the brain in a negative way.

Despite studies of plants and animals, specialists working with people do not want to draw conclusions about any positive correlation between music and mental development of children. While piano training can support the child’s spatial thinking and mathematical skills, experts are not ready to draw such conclusions about the development of the fetus under the influence of classics during pregnancy. At best, the doctor can assume that the music has a positive impact on the fetus only on the basis of unofficial data. Other researchers, however, show that future infants react to different rhythmic qualities of music by changing their breathing, which begins to correspond to the musical rhythm, suggesting that music really has a positive effect on the development of the baby’s brain.

Although the positive “Mozart effect” on the intellectual development of the child is not proved, listening to pleasant music contributes to the development of a sense of well-being and has a positive impact on children. In any case, doctors advise to avoid loud music that can scare or harm a child, and also avoid too long listening, which can “irritate” the fetus.

Thus, there is no reliable data indicating that music can influence the intellectual development of the fetus, but experts believe that listening to soft, pleasant classical music has a beneficial effect on the psychoemotional development of the fetus. Perhaps the best offer is simply to relax and enjoy pleasant quiet music the way you usually do, and most likely your child will relax and enjoy with you at these moments.
